Rita, it's not that people "pass on" something with advanced age, but genetic breakdowns do "accumulate" with age. Classic example of it - risk of Down Syndrome with advanced maternal age. At 25 this risk is 1/1,300, while by 45 it is as high as 1/30: ***********.aafp.org/afp/20000815/825.html. There is also some eveidence that advanced father's age might play a role in kids with autism. So, yes, people having kids at older age are playing with fire.....
