USA is still a very young country. Just over 200 years old. The society is still learning. Look at everything else - Health Care, Nationalization of everything, etc... Unfortunately the "leaders" are copying a lot of stuff from Europe, which went through the same cycles, although at much slower pace, and going to destroy itself again.
We have to stay away from the European model. Find our own way, as we did, when separated from the British Empire...
